Welcome to the Ethnic Group Relationships Study!

Please read the following carefully.

Introduction: Today, UK is among the world's most ethnically diverse countries in the world, and better understanding of the effects of such diversity is needed, including how ethnic relationships and potential discrimination/segregation affect outcomes later on in life.

Objective: The following questions are designated to investigate ethnic relationships and experiences you had during secondary school years. This study contributes to Sabahat Cigdem Bagci (the principal researcher’s) postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The main purpose of this research is to explore the role of cross-ethnic friendships on various psychological outcomes and well-being.

Participation Criteria: The selection criteria for the present study are (a) to be between 19-25 years-old, (b) to have studied at secondary school in the U.K., and (c) to be fluent in English. All ethnic groups are welcomed to participate in the study, but we specifically encourage individuals with non-White ethnic backgrounds in order to reach an ethnically diverse sample. We also encourage you to participate, regardless of whether you attended a diverse secondary school or not, and regardless of whether you had a diverse set of friends or had no friendships outside your ethnic group.

Procedure: Your participation includes the completion of several scales consisting of questions about your cross-ethnic friendships, ethnic identification and related experiences during secondary school. The completion of the total questionnaire should take approximately 15-20 minutes and you will be debriefed at the end of your participation.

Confidentiality and Withdrawal: The data we collect will be kept confidential and we will not require any identifying information (e.g., such as your name). Your participation in this research is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw from the experiment at any time you feel uncomfortable. You can also choose not to answer some of the questions and continue with the next question.

Ethical Approval: The study has the ethical approval from Psychology Department Ethics Committee, Goldsmiths, University of London.

As a result of the completion of the questionnaire, you will be given the opportunity at the end of the survey to participate in a prize draw of £20 to compensate for your time and effort.
