1. Carceral Geography Research/Working Group

Following a very successful series of sessions at RGS-IBG conferences in recent years, especially in 2014, discussion has developed over the utility of a RGS-IBG Research or Working Group for carceral geography. This would provide some formal and financial support for researchers (and particularly postgraduates) in this field, and would raise the profile of this area of work.

This poll is intended to gauge interest in this potential avenue of development, both from Fellows/Postgraduate members (and non-members) of RGS-IBG, since any Research/Working Group application would require a minimum level of membership.

Please complete the poll and do feel free to forward the link on to anyone you think may be interested!

many thanks

Question Title

* 2. We are thinking of applying to establish a Research Group or Limited Life Working Group of the RGS-IBG for carceral geography.

A Research Group is a collective of researchers which supports collaborative research; hosts activities within the RGS-IBG Annual Conference; convenes workshops seminars, and conferences; encourages postgraduate participation; maintains websites; distributes newsletters and/or bulletins; promotes undergraduate and postgraduate activity through dissertation prizes and grants for young researchers and postgraduates to attend relevant meetings.

A Limited Life Working Group or Limited Life Working Party fulfils similar aims. It would be created for an initial period of two years, which may be extended for two further years. Once established, it may submit a proposal for Research Group, but this progression is not guaranteed. The activities of a Limited Life Working Group/Party could also be conducted within an existing Research Group.

So, only a Research Group can offer grants for young researchers and postgraduates, and a Limited Life Working Group/Party has a maximum term of operation.

Would you support, in principle, the establishment of either a Research Group or a Limited Life Working Group for carceral geography?

Question Title

* 3. Which option do you think would be most appropriate?

Question Title

* 5. If a Research Group or a Limited Life Working Group for Carceral Geography existed, would you join it?
Note: membership would be free, and open to BOTH Fellows/Postgraduate Members/Other Members AND non-Members of RGS-IBG.

Question Title

* 6. If this survey demonstrates that there is sufficient interest, we would proceed with an application to the RGS-IBG for a Research Group or Limited Life Working Group.

At the application stage, we would need to provide a list of 40 (for a Research Group) or 20 (for a Limited Life Working Group) RGS-IBG Fellows/Members who would support the application.

Please choose from the following statements. Please note that we would not include your name on any application without confirming this with you directly first.
