LiveWell Leadville Prioritization Survey

Over the last year, Lake County Build a Generation has been gathering input from Leadville citizens about Healthy Eating and Active Living strategies that we might implement over the next 3 years (which will comprise the first implementation stage of our 9 years of LiveWell funding). Now we need to prioritize in order to write our 3-year Community Strategic Plan. Please help by giving us your input below.

Question Title

* 1. Which Healthy Eating and Active Living strategies is our community most passionate about? Please choose FIVE.

 Continue to improve school lunches (i.e., encourage more scratch cooking, increased local or healthy food)

 Create school gardens and greenhouses

 Increase school-based nutrition education

 Update City-County Comprehensive Plan to support healthy food systems and choices (and update related policies)

 Promote/create community gardens and/or greenhouses

 Improve the food retail climate: encourage healthier food at Safeway, support Mountain Morning Food Co-Op, determine feasibility of establishing an alternative grocery store, expand access to the farmer’s market (extending season, providing access for SNAP clients); identify or develop a commercial kitchen for community use; work with restaurants to encourage serving healthier and/or local food; ensure healthy food is affordable

 Conduct a food assessment to further evaluate access to healthy food for all residents

 Enhance our emergency food system (for those without enough food) to ensure the food provided is healthy

 Develop/Expand economic incentives for local agriculture

 Support, promote, develop, or expand community nutrition and/or cooking classes (including Farm to Table classes or parent-child cooking classes )

 Support/expand after-school nutrition and/or cooking classes

 Provide information (such as a list of local food source/providers)

 Create a food health week

 Reduce lead contamination "trigger levels" in Leadville/increase education and remediation in order to make gardening safer

 Expand access to the Leadville Community Garden

 Develop community gardens at trailer parks

 Increase Leadville community members’ access to downvalley (Buena Vista, Salida, Paonia) food producers

 Assess, create, support, and enforce safe routes to places, particularly schools (develop/repair sidewalks or trails; Identify critical areas for street crossing safety and signage)

 Assess, create, support and enforce safe routes to places, particularly trailer parks (expand trails systems to trailer parks; Identify critical areas for street crossing safety and signage)

 Enhance and enforce sidewalk/ crosswalk/pathway policies to increase pedestrian safety and access (i.e., speed limits, standards for pedestrian safety, snow removal codes)

 Raise community awareness about complete streets

 Update the City-County Comprehensive Plan to support Complete Streets (and update related policies)

 Assure after school program availability

 Develop/promote school policies to increase physical activity for children

 Increase communication about options for youth to engage in physical activity

 Ensure Leadville residents have transportation options to recreational activities and facilities

 Increase collaboration among all stakeholders involved with recreation

 Identify high density areas (i.e., trailer parks) that need more options for community members to engage in physical activity

 Create physical activity opportunities for teenagers

 Expand Zumba classes throughout community

 Expand summer programs and camps for children

 Improve, maintain, or develop parks

 Develop designated off-leash areas

 Continue to improve school playgrounds

 Reduce lead contamination "trigger levels" in Leadville/increase education and remediation in order to make it safer for youth to play in their yards

 Evaluate the feasibility of a Recreation Center

 Identify the barriers that limit youth access to the outdoors, particularly for low-SES students, and strive to improve access.

 Work with teachers to introduce “fitness breaks” into the classroom

 Ensure the sustainability of Get the Lead Out

 Increase street lighting in order to make Leadville a more pleasant place to walk/bike

 Beautify neighborhoods in order to make Leadville a more pleasant place to walk/bike

 Identify areas on Main Street or elsewhere in need of economic development in order to make Leadville a more pleasant place to walk/bike

 Form arts district/encourage outdoor art projects in order to make Leadville a more pleasant place to walk/bike

 Put on a HEAL film festival or film series

 Promote Leadville's recreation assets to community members and tourists

 Expand diversity of community members involved with HEAL community development (esp. youth and Latino community members)

 Support existing and new businesses that create access to HEAL for residents

 Link any new trail building to job creation for youth

 Continue to preserve the mining district and develop recreational opportunities to tour it

 Support the creation of a winter trail use plan

 Support the creation of a Trails Master Plan and/or the expansion of existing recreational trail networks, including any of the following: expansion of Mineral Belt Trail connectors to the Community Park, Turquoise Lake, Mount Massive Golf Course, outlying trailer parks, and neighboring counties.
