Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a doctoral student from Brunel University.I am researching the subject of higher education funding policy and its impact on university operations including governance and management. University activities are becoming entrepreneurial in the UK as the government’s market agenda encourages universities to be income generating institutions. The government also encourages private sector provision of higher education. I would like to know your honest opinion on the questions I have raised in the questionnaire attached in respect of the subject matter mentioned above. Whatever you say will be treated as strictly confidential. Your name, position and university will not be mentioned in my thesis. I am aware of the ethical implications of disclosure. This study has ethics approval from the Brunel School of Sport and Education. Your personal data and the information you give will be discarded three months after completion of my programme.
You are being approached because you are one of the stakeholders of higher education and your view is important to my study. The changing higher education funding policy is having great impact on university activities. Higher education funding has been declining and universities are looking for alternative ways of making up the short fall in finances to survive as a university. University governance and management is also affected as a result of the new business culture of universities. Student fees and maintenance is another issue students' and with which universities are grappling. Furthermore, academic leadership and administration are also affected by the changing face of university activities. I am therefore requesting you to make a contribution to the higher education debate by giving your view on what you see, experience and feel and the likely consequences to higher education in the future.
Remember that you are a voice, so please use this medium to express it. I know it will take you some time to complete it but the importance of your contribution makes it worthwhile.
