Listing and annotation: Sodium hydroxide—prohibited for use in lye peeling of fruits and vegetables

Use: As a synthetic non-agricultural product allowed as an ingredient/processing aid in or on products labeled "organic" or "made with (specified organic ingredients/food groups)".

Common applications: Caustic soda. Soda Lye. An alkali and emulsifier. Readily absorbswater. Use as a modifier for food starch, a glazing for pretzels, and a peeling agent for tubers and fruits. The FDA banned more than 10 percent used in household liquid drain cleaners. Its ingestion causes vomiting, prostration and collapse. Inhalation caused lung damage. GRAS with GMP.
