Students: The Real World Design Challenge asks you to complete two questionnaires – one before and one after you work on the Challenge. Asking you similar questions twice allows us to understand ways that the Real World Design Challenge shapes your thinking about what it takes to become an engineer. For these “before” and “after” questions to work – you need to be completely honest in your responses. There are no “right answers” and there are no “wrong answers”. No one will see your individual answers. No one will be able to trace your answers back to you. A computer program will match up your two surveys to let us know if you changed your mind on any of the questions at the end of the RWDC experience.

The survey includes questions about your background; your interests in science, mathematics, engineering and technology; and your career interests. It will take about 30 minutes to complete. There are no risks associated with completing this questionnaire as it is part of the Real World Design Challenge in which you have chosen to participate. Your team will receive an extra 2 points for completing this survey. Answering these questions may help to improve the RWDC experience for next year’s participants and help us understand more about career interests of today’s youth. It won’t cost you anything to provide this feedback. Your answers are confidential. If we write professional articles about the RWDC, we will never use your name or associate your responses to your school or team. We will do a good job at keeping all our records secret by following the rules that the U.S. government has made for researchers. Contact Information: Questions should be directed to Joyce Malyn-Smith jmalynsmith@edc.org. If you have any questions regarding your rights as a participant in this study, you can contact EDC’s Human Protection Administrator at 1-800-225-4276 ext. 2971 HumanProtections@edc.org. By participating in this survey, you agree to these terms.
