New Hampshire Action Coalition: Empowering Nurses to Serve as Leaders
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” emphasizes the importance of nurse leadership in improving America’s health care system. The call to action for nurses is to become involved in decision making bodies and participate on boards at the community, state and national level to make a difference for health care not only within our state but across our nation. Board membership provides an opportunity for nurses to influence healthcare policy and decision making during a time of healthcare reform.
New Hampshire Organization of Nurse Leaders (NHONL) is a nursing co-lead organization partnering with nursing co-lead New Hampshire Nurses Association, and Foundation for Healthy Communities and AARP in the New Hampshire Action Coalition. New Hampshire was officially included as an Action Coalition state in February of 2012 and this year has formally initiated a Leadership Pillar workgroup led by NHONL.
The first leadership initiative is to identify nurses who are currently serving on local, statewide, and national boards, as well as those nurses who would be interested in serving as leaders through board membership. Our goal is to begin identifying organizations who are interested in nurses as board members and matching their needs with nurses interested in serving board roles.
The following questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete and will help us to better understand how together, we can make a difference to impact healthcare today and in the future.
