Informed Consent

 
You are being asked to participate in a study about sexual behaviors of students who study abroad. This study is being conducted by Tiffany Marcantonio (marcan56@students.rowan.edu) an undergraduate student, and Dr. D.J. Angelone, (angeloned@rowan.edu)an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Rowan University. The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes, feelings, and perceptions students have about engaging in sexual behaviors while studying abroad. As part of this study, you will be asked questions regarding your thoughts/beliefs on this topic. You will also be answering questions concerning your personal attributes such as age, gender, and ethnicity.

Some of the topics may be uncomfortable or unsettling to you. We hope that the broad nature of our questions will prevent any awkwardness or discomfort. You are not required to share anything more than what you feel comfortable sharing. If you do become uncomfortable, you are free to withdraw your participation at any time without penalty. This study was not designed to benefit you directly, beyond merely exposure to the research process. The benefits we hope to gain from this research include contributing to a better understanding of behaviors of travel abroad students and prevention of potentially risky behaviors.

Any and all information obtained from you during the study will be confidential. Your privacy will be protected at all times. You will not be identified individually in any way as a result of your participation in this research. When the data is extracted it will contain only numbers with no way of tracing the survey back to you. The data collected may be used as part of presentations or publications related to this topic. All data reported in publications or reports will be in aggregate form. This means the data will be combined and reported in such a way that no individuals can be identified.

Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may refuse to participate in this research. Such refusal will not have any negative consequences for you. If you begin to participate in the research, you may at any time, for any reason, discontinue your participation without any negative consequences.

By choosing to continue, you are acknowledging that you understand what you are being asked to do and that you can stop at any time. You are also indicating that you are at least 18 years of age and that you agree to take part in this project. Finally, you understand that your participation does not imply employment with the state of New Jersey, Rowan University, the principal investigator, or any other project facilitator.
