Unions21 Fair Work Commission

Fair Pay

This survey is part of a larger piece of work the 'Fair Work Commission' and there will be a chance for some of those taking part to expand on their thoughts in discussion with the Commissioners.

This section deals with pay. Millions of households are heading for a long period of stagnant living standards unless bold steps are taken to ensure that growth over the next decade is broadly shared. Three issues Unions21 have identified are: An increase in the proportion of GDP taken as profits rather than shared as pay. An increase in earnings at the top rather than the bottom. A lack of pressure on employers to increase wages above the minimum. This section of the survey asks: In what ways can we make pay fairer?

You are not required to answer all questions.
1. Do you agree with a maximum pay ratio from average employee to chief executive pay at 1:10? And/or what other means of increasing pay equality would you recommend?
2. 'Pay-avoidance' might be described as a company making a large, increasing profit and not increasing the pay of its low-paid employees. Do you agree that when this happens a consultation with low-paid employees should be automatically triggered? And/or what other means of increasing pressure on pay-avoidance would you recommend?
3. Do you agree that the Minimum Wage should increase annually by at least inflation? And/or what other ways should low pay be tackled?
4. Should government and public sector employers ensure all staff are paid at least the Living Wage?
5. Internships are almost essential for access to many professions. A high number are unpaid and unaffordable to those from ordinary backgrounds.
