Wikipedia Assignment - for First Time Editors

Welcome to the Arts+Feminism wikipedia edit-a-thon! Lots of details about this international event posted at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism. Look under the Tasks tab to see the list of articles we've been invited to create or improve.
Using your amazing powers to find what you need within Wikipedia, you can follow the steps below to learn How To:
  • Create your own account for editing wikipedia & setup your User page.
  • Find an existing wikipedia article you want to work on, then look at the [Discussion] tab to find out what previous editors have been saying to each other
  • Look at the [History] tab for the article and compare today's page with a previous version
  • Learn how to make a basic edit, fixing a typo or grammatical error
  • Learn how to link two wikipedia articles to each other
  • Learn how to add new info to any page in a way that will stick
  • Learn how to include a citation for whatever you've added

* 4. Once you have a wikipedia account, you are ready to try editing a page. It helps to find a page you want to edit and another (3rd) window with the Wikipedia tutorial information. You can figure it out.

Just above the [Save Changes] button is the Edit Summary comment box - make sure you put a quick comment in to describe the changes you have made. When you're happy that you've done it successfully, come back and answer this question.

* 5. Lots of wikipedia articles could be better linked to each other - all you need to do is identify a phrase or term on one page that isn't linked to the page it could be and edit (add brackets) to create the link. You can look over any articles you are interested and find possibilities.

* 6. Now the biggie! Find a piece of information from a credible source outside of Wikipedia that you would like to add to an existing article. Read the [Discussion] page to see what other editors have said and how recently there's been activity. Then figure out how to add both the piece of information and the citation for it. Make sure you add a comment before you [Save Changes]. Then go to the [Discussion] tab and leave a note about what you did.
