Based on community feedback received, below are four design concepts for improvements to Third St. between B St. and A St. Two designs will be selected for further development and presented to City Council in May after the next community workshop on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 6 - 8 PM at the US Bicycle Hall of Fame (303 B Street).

- 20' Auto/bicycle lane
- Existing circulation pattern retained
- Trees remain in place
- Parking removed for widened pedestrian area

BENEFITS:
- Added pedestrian space
- Diagonal bollards replaced with traffic diverter

DRAWBACKS:
- Parking removed
- Widened sidewalks split by trees and furnishings into narrower "through zones"
- Auto diverter narrows bicycle passage

- Parking removed to create two-way cycle track on South side of 3rd Street
- Trees retained in place

BENEFITS:
- Bicycles separated from cars
- Diagonal bollards removed
- One-way through vehicle access for entire length of 3rd Street

DRAWBACKS:
- Cycle track is narrower than campus bike path
- Separated two-way cycle track complicates intersections
- Pedestrian space not widened
- Loss of parking
- Street divided, less suitable for special event use

- Retain existing trees in place

BENEFITS:
- Two-way vehicle access to both blocks
- Paving treatment provides special character to district
- Some parking
- Delivery access
- Flexible space, supports special events and outdoor dining

DRAWBACKS:
- Through cyclists msut slow down and use caution around pedestrians
- Some parking removed
- Pedestrian zone split by trees and furnishings into narrower "through zones"

- Autos restricted on 3rd St. from B St. to A St.
- Parking removed to expand sidewalks
- New trees located at outer edge of sidewalk, creating a larger pedestrian zone

BENEFITS:
- Car-free street
- Wide pedestrian sidewalks, North side of street
- Wide "through zone" for cyclists

DRAWBACKS:
- Lack of auto access may harm existing businesses
- Customer, ADA and delivery parking more difficult (relocated to side streets)
- Pedestrian zone on South side of street not widened
