Introduction

Organisms that can cause human or animal disease are placed into one of four Hazard Groups. These are classified according to the relative risk the pathogens may present to the surrounding environment, including the human and animal populations. Research and diagnostic laboratories are designated a particular Biological Safety Level (BSL) depending on the agents used and the measures needed to minimise risk of exposure of live pathogens to susceptible hosts.

Generally the term “high containment” refers to BSL3-BSL4 laboratories and corresponds to the Hazard Group level of the pathogens with which it is able to work safely.
