You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Daniel M.T. Fessler, Ph.D., Associate Professor, from the Anthropology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. You are a possible participant in this study if you are at least 18 years of age.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to explore how social experiences influence feelings, perceptions and memory.
PROCEDURES
If you volunteer to participate in this study, we will ask you to recall and write about an experience you have had with another person. Afterwords, you will be asked to answer questions about how you feel and about how confident you are about the truth of a series of factual claims. We will also ask for demographic information, such as your age, gender, and so forth.
Participation in the study should take a total of about 10 minutes.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
No potential risks are anticipated. If, however, you feel discomfort in writing about your social experience or answering any questions, you are free to exit the study without consequences of any kind.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS
You will not be compensated for your participation in this research study. In addition to the benefits of conducting basic research, society may benefit from a fuller understanding of how emotions influence memory. In the future, those interested in this research will be able to refer back to the author’s web site at http://www.sscnet.ucla.edulanthro/faculty/fessler/ and see the final results.
CONFIDENTIALITY
This study is anonymous. The information collected will not be linked to you in any way. Please do not provide any identifying information (such as your name) in your responses.
PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
This study is entirely voluntary. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may end your participation at any time without consequences of any kind. The investigator may withdraw you from this research if circumstances arise which warrant doing so.
