1. INTRODUCTION TO THE SURVEY

SHOULD I COMPLETE THE SURVEY?
Yes! YOUR opinion matters to us. Please complete the survey if you work in play as a volunteer, paid worker, manager or owner/contractor/consultant/freelancer.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY PLAY AND PLAYWORK?
Play is typically understood to be 'freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated' (undertaken for its own sake). Playwork seeks to enrich and enhance children’s play. It takes place wherever adults support children’s play. Playwork is not driven by prescribed education or care outcomes, although of course, play may have educational benefits and may take place in childcare settings.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The survey wants to find out what people involved in play in Scotland, think about play in Scotland, at the end of 2013.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THE SURVEY?
About 10-20 minutes

WHEN DO YOU NEED IT RETURNED?
Ideally, by Friday 6th December.

IS IT CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes. The only people with access to the results are Dr. John McKendrick and Chris Martin. No individual will be identified in the research report.

WHO IS ASKING THE QUESTIONS?
Play Scotland. Dr. John McKendrick (Board of Directors) is administering the survey on its behalf. Chris Martin (SW Play Forum) is administering the same survey in the SW of England and we will compare results.

WHAT WILL BE DONE WITH THE RESULTS?
John will write a short report on the key findings for Play Scotland. John and Chris will also use the findings to co-author a paper on play in Scotland and SW England that they are hoping to publish in the American Journal of Play.

3. You can print off a copy of the survey, write your responses on the paper copy and return by post to John McKendrick, SCOTTISH PLAY BAROMETER 2013, Glasgow School for Business and Society, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, G4 0BA.
