SUPER STORM SANDY: RELIEF OPERATIONS SURVEY

Documenting the First 60 Days of Your Response

 
PURPOSE: Our two-fold purpose is to gather and then to share information about what your congregation or organization did in the first 60 days of the Sandy relief effort - and to find out if/how you will support recovery in 2013.

BACKGROUND: New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS), the Interfaith Center of New York (ICNY) and the National Disaster Interfaiths Network (NDIN) are conducting this survey to document the services which New York City congregations, as well as faith-based and non-profit organizations, provided in response to Super Storm Sandy during the first 60 days of relief efforts (pre-landfall October 29 through December 31, 2012).

The response to Super Storm Sandy in New York City has clearly demonstrated that congregations, faith-based organizations and our non-profit service-provider partners form the backbone of disaster relief and recovery. It is critical for us to illuminate the vital role that our sector has played and will continue to play in NYC disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Early on, the unprecedented outpouring of goods and services from our communities has been crucial; our long-term recovery programs will be needed for years to come.

However, the scale of Sandy’s impact has made it challenging to locate and network effectively with all the resources available to affected families, congregations and other relief and recovery organizations. And so we seek to strengthen our impact by sharing solid information, leveraging our resources, and enhancing our partnerships.

USE OF DATA: The survey is designed to collect contact information and service delivery statistics before this perishable data is lost to the passage of time. A summary report of all findings will be made public; only aggregate information will be included in any research/analysis conducted. Your organization's contact information and available services may be included in new assistance directories; no personal information will be included. We also will use the contact information gathered to provide an online resource directory of all ongoing efforts. This tool will be made available to disaster case managers, recovery agencies and impacted families.

REQUEST: Please help us quantify, in as much detail as possible, the resources (volunteer time, staff time, in-kind support, and money) your congregation or organization invested in 2012 Sandy relief and recovery; the partnerships you formed; and the number of clients you served.
