WHY BRAZIL?

In the summers of 2014 and 2016, Brazil will host the World Cup and the Olympics, respectively. Many Brazilians and foreigners alike view hosting the megaevents as a special opportunity to attract investment in public infrastructure and social programs that would generate long-lasting, positive impact for the Brazilian host cities in decades to come. However, recent waves of protests across the nation underscored the popular disapproval of extravagant public expenditures on Stadiums and the Olympic Village, and urged public officials to instead allocate resources to Brazil’s overburdened hospitals and underperforming schools. As the international spotlight shines even brighter on Brazil in the coming years, how will the nation reconcile its football festivities with the fervor of popular demands?

WHY COACHES ACROSS CONTINENTS?

Coaches Across Continents is a non-profit organization at the forefront of an international movement that promotes sport for social impact. CAC uses innovative techniques to train local governments and NGOs around the world to turn the game of football into a pedagogical tool. CAC has successfully developed curricula that teach at-risk and underserved youth about topics such as women’s empowerment, HIV/AIDS prevention, life skills, health and wellness and conflict resolution. During the World Cup, CAC and its local partners will focus on how community leaders and educators can leverage Brazilian football culture to effectively dialogue with youth about gender inequalities, child rights, violence, drug abuse and other important social issues. Learning and service experiences for student volunteers are planned to be integrated into the 2014 Brazil program.
