Background

The Bureau of Assessment and Accountability (BAA) is in the process of developing a new statewide social studies assessment for the MI-Access Functional Independence (FI) student population. As a first step in the development process, it brought together Michigan educators with expertise in social studies and/or the FI population and asked them to reduce the current social studies Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) and High School Content Expectations (HSCE) in breadth, depth, and complexity so they would be appropriate for and meaningful to FI students. The extended GLCEs/HSCEs were then reviewed and revised by the BAA, reviewed again by the Michigan educators involved in the extension process, and are now being made available for field review.

Before completing this survey, the BAA recommends that you (1) go to www.mi.gov/mi-access, (2) click on “DRAFT MI-Access Functional Independence Social Studies EGLCEs/EHSCEs,” (3) print the draft extension document(s) you wish to review (there is one document for grade 5, one for grade 8, and one for each discipline covered in grade 11), (4) read the document(s) in full and make notes on them, and (5) then answer the survey questions. Please do not rely on the survey itself as a source document, because it does not contain all of the information you will need for your responses.

Thank you for your time and your thoughtful review of the draft EGLCEs/EHSCEs. The BAA sincerely appreciates your efforts to help make this assessment an accurate and successful tool for measuring what Michigan’s FI students know and can do in relation to social studies.
