1. Background


The Academic Division is pursuing the addition of a new section: Higher Education Administration.

Rationale: Librarians who begin their career as special librarians in academic institutions are often promoted over time into more general administrative positions. This section gives those special academic librarians a place to discuss higher education administration issues at SLA.

A minimum number (15) of Academic Division members need to sign the petition agreeing to form the Higher Education Administration Section. By signing, Division members agree to join the new Section, if approved by the SLA Board. There is no additional cost for current Academic Division members to join the Section.

Question Title

* 1. PETITION: We, the undersigned members of the Special Libraries Association, do hereby petition for the addition of a Higher Education Administration (HEA) Section to the Academic Division of the Special Libraries Association. We desire to participate in the activities of the proposed section. The proposed scope note of the HEA section shall be:

“The Higher Education Administration Section of the SLA Academic Division provides a forum for members who are interested in big picture higher education issues and how academic librarians can respond to those challenges and new directions in academia. Some topics to be addressed include accreditation, assessment, student recruitment, retention and persistence, outreach to parents, marketing, advancement and development, and facilities. The section will give members a place to talk about these issues and learn from peers in Associate Dean, Associate University Librarian, Director, Dean, or other administrative roles in academic libraries.”
