Humanitarian Shelter Coordination (previous IFRC Shelter Coordination Training - SCT)

Application Form

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)  are pleased to invite applications from interested individuals to the up-coming course "Humanitarian Shelter Coordination". Please fill in the following application form.

Applications are welcome from individuals working in the humanitarian and shelter sectors for the Red Cross or Red Crescent Movement, United Nations agencies or Non-Governmental Organisations, or Governments, particularly agencies or institutions actively involved in the interagency shelter cluster at global or country level. The course is also open to individuals seeking to advance their understanding of and expertise in the field of interagency, humanitarian coordination.

The course is being provided by IFRC and UNHCR as part of their contribution to global level preparedness in the shelter sector. Agencies interested in supporting country level shelter cluster coordination are invited to fund the participation of appropriate staff.

In partnership with Oxford Brookes University this course "Humanitarian Shelter Coordination" became certified Masters-level credit-rated course in 2013. This is a competency based, assessed course worth 10 Masters level credits (a complete Masters in the UK is worth 180 credits) that can be transferred to the Masters in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) from Oxford Brookes University or any other similar postgraduate qualifications in a large number of universities.

The UK’s National Qualification Framework (NQF) rates all courses in terms of demand on the learner so they can be easily compared. Masters level courses are rated at level 7 of 8 possible levels. Credits are also recognised internationally and the IFRC SCT is equivalent to level 7 on the European Qualifications Framework (EQCA). On the European Credit Framework, two UK credits are worth one European credit (ECTS), so our course is the equivalent of 5 ECTS.

This course is a combination of online and face-to-face learning. It includes a tutored on-line component called “The Humanitarian Reform and cluster system” at the IFRC e-learning platform of 5 weeks (from the 3rd of August to the 6th of September, 2015). This will be followed by a 6-day face-to-face workshop in Europe, location still to be determined (from the 28th of September to the 4th of October, 2015). Only participants that successfully complete the on-line component will be able to participate in the face-to-face workshop.

This course is demanding in terms of time and commitment. The estimated amount of participant effort hours to complete the course is 100 hours. Before you apply, please consider carefully whether you can commit the necessary time in order to complete the course. Where appropriate, please make sure you obtain the endorsement of your supervisor to participate in this programme.

Applications for the course should be submitted through this website by the 12th of July 2015 with the agreement of your employer (reference) if this applied to you.
