Are you ready to make a difference in your justice system and really impact public safety? Are you frustrated by constantly arguing with stakeholders who refuse to see your point of view? Are your reform efforts being stalled by key partners who are uncooperative or absent?

On Saturday, October 25th the IACP Pretrial Justice team, in partnership with the Pretrial Justice Institute and the Florida State University Project on Accountable Justice, will host an intensive and interactive training entitled, “You Don’t Have to Win the Argument to Make a Difference: Communicating about Pretrial Justice.” This course is designed to build confidence in your role as a leader in pretrial justice reform and will result in participants leaving with a strengthened communications skill set. The course will provide important information on the latest best practices in pretrial risk assessment and risk management that prioritizes public and officer safety, and on key messages from public opinion polling and focus groups. It will also provide hands-on practice communicating about the need for pretrial improvements with anyone who is unaware of, hesitant, averse, or even adversarial to them. This training is interactive and engaging, and relies on your full participation from 8:30am – 2:30pm. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to practice a communication method that focuses on the intent of communication and shared values, rather than “winning an argument.” Participants will also be provided with lunch. Space is limited and pre-registration is required; we anticipate that this no-cost course will reach capacity quickly.
