Summer Reading Suggestions

Thanks for sharing ideas for the 2013 summer reading selection with the Summer Reading Selection Committee. The committee, made up of staff, faculty, and first year students, considers each suggestion through the following rubric:

-the selection should speak to an idea or topic that is important to the new student experience, such as transition to a new community, as well as connect to one or more of the competencies in the Smith Design for Learning

-the selection should be of a length and subject matter that is manageable for students to engage with during the summer

-accessibility is a consideration so, whenever possible, the selection should be available in paperback or financial assistance should be offered for purchasing the book

-engagement with the author is important to the experience, so the ability to schedule the author to visit campus is a consideration in choosing a book

Once the committee has narrowed down the options to one finalist, the recommendation is sent to The Vice President for Campus Life and Dean of the College for final approval. The selection is typically announced in late Spring.
