The theme of the October 23rd Dropout Prevention & Recovery Work Group meeting is focused on using data from the new Massachusetts Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS) released for the first time in September 2012.


PARTICIPANTS:
This invitation is targeted to the MassGrad School Cohort and their district-level representatives. We look forward to continuing our work with you over the next several years to meet your needs and interests! Participating districts should have a willingness to be an "open book" with other districts to maximize the benefits of the Work Group activities.

Each participating district is expected to bring a team of four to eight (4-8) school and district staff to the meeting. Suggested members for the Team include leadership from: middle and high schools, special education, English language learner programs, guidance or student support services, the superintendent's office, data specialists, alternative education programs, and key community partners.


TENTATIVE AGENDA:
8:00-8:45 -- Registration*

8:45 -- Welcome and Overview of the MA EWIS
This plenary session will provide all participants a brief overview of the new MA EWIS

9:30 -- I Have the EWIS Data, Now What?
Moving beyond the basics of understanding the EWIS - using the data to inform action! This plenary session will introduce the National High School Center's Early Warning System Implementation Process.

10:30 -- Break

10:45 -- EWIS Data Consultancy in District Pairs
A twist on the case consultancy session we've had in the past - district teams will be matched together to help interpret and provide insights on each other's non-confidential EWIS data. No pre-meeting prep required - ESE will provide guidance and facilitation for this session at the meeting.

12:30-2:30 -- OPTIONAL: Lunch* and Guided Team Time
This optional portion of the agenda is designed to build on the morning's sessions and provide district teams some structured planning time. District teams can also use this time for questions and discussions with ESE staff on using the EWIS data. Teams that stay for the afternoon will be provided custom data packets with aggregate EWIS data that can be used to inform the planning time.

*Please note that due to current state restrictions, we can not provide any food or beverages at this event. However, breakfast and lunch options are available for purchase at the hotel. Thank you for your understanding.

ABOUT THE DROPOUT PREVENTION & RECOVERY WORK GROUP:
The Dropout Prevention & Recovery Work Group was created several years ago. Under MassGrad, all districts eligible for MassGrad opportunities are welcome to participate and we are also increasing the types of opportunities available.

The purpose of the Work Group is to provide...
- Structured opportunities for districts to learn from each other
- A venue for sharing information from “experts” – from both within and outside of the state
- Facilitated time for districts teams to develop or refine a dropout prevention and recovery action plan

Three types of Work Group opportunities are available: 1) face-to-face meetings (typically twice a year), 2) topical webinars, and 3) district "open houses" to learn on-site about other district programming.
