Please read this consent information carefully.

This research is being done to investigate undergraduate students' perceptions of hypothetical "students" and recommendations for assistance with personal problems.

THE PARTICIPANTS MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER and be fluent in the English language. We anticipate 100-200 participants in the study.

The total time required to complete the study is between 15 to 20 minutes. You will be asked to read one of three hypothetical (i.e., fictitious) "student" profiles and then answer 3 questions about this "student." You will be asked some basic demographic information (e.g. gender, year in school, psychology courses completed). You will also be given the OPTION to indicate whether you or someone you know has experienced mental health issues. It is important to know that you will NOT be asked to provide any personally identifiable information; consequently, your responses to all of the questions are ANONYMOUS.

You are a volunteer. If you do join the study and change your mind later, you may quit at any time without fear of penalty or loss of benefits by clicking on the “QUIT” button on the computer screen.

The study procedures pose no anticipated risks to participants. The survey items focus on topics frequently encountered in a college student population. However, if you are uncomfortable with the study questions, please remember that you are free to discontinue your participation at any time without penalty to you.

Although there is no direct benefit to you for being in this study, the information you provide may help university faculty and staff members better understand students' perceptions of undergraduate students who are experiencing personal problems as well as their recommendations for seeking help.

If you choose to participate in this study, please try to answer all questions honestly and thoughtfully. You may also choose to leave a question blank.

If you are a psychology student, your participation in this research is documented through the CWU Psychology Department’s SONA system only IF you signed up for the study through SONA. However, the amount of extra credit you may receive for research participation is between you and your course instructors. It is also important to know that the SONA system only documents your participation in the study; it does NOT collect any information about your responses to survey questions.

Programs have been implemented to protect the anonymity of your answers in regard to this study. However, online-based information technology is not a guarantee of total privacy. Still, be certain that all possible steps have been taken in order to keep your answers and identity from being traced back to you. Please be sure to close your Browser after completing the survey by using the “CLOSE” option in the corner of the screen. This is done to further protect your anonymity.
