Background

For the past two years, the Michigan Department of Education’s Office of Standards and Assessment (OSA) has been developing new statewide social studies assessments for the MI-Access Functional Independence (FI) student population.

There were a number of steps involved in the development process, including (1) extending the state’s social studies Grade Level Content Expectations and High School Content Expectations, (2) writing and reviewing hundreds of new social studies items, and (3) writing and reviewing numerous contexts (or passages) designed to assess social studies knowledge in an entirely new way. Michigan educators were involved at every step.

As you know, the new social studies assessments were put in front of students for the first time this spring in the MI-Access FI Social Studies Online Pilot. As an Assessment Administrator, you were an integral part of the piloting process and the OSA wants to hear what you thought about your and your students’ testing experience.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us your feedback through this survey. The OSA will use your thoughts and ideas to determine how best to proceed in making the new social studies assessments operational.
