A Study of Piagetian Developmental Level

We are inviting you to participate in this research study because we are investigating the developmental level of students and teachers as a function of the type of education they participate in. Piaget was an educator in the early 1900’s who classified childhood development into different levels based on how children perceived the world. Piaget did not set an age for transitioning from one level to another, but gave rough age ranges, based on a person’s life experiences. For the age range of 9 to adulthood, Piaget postulated that people could be in “Concrete Operational” or “Formal Operational” levels.

We are interested in studying how you or your child performs on an assessment instrument, called the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT). The GALT will determine whether you or your child is in the concrete or formal operational developmental level. The formal operational level is the highest level possible in Piaget’s developmental scheme. Knowing your own or your child’s developmental level can assist you in making informed choices about how to present future educational lessons.

The on-line assessment will only take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete and can be done whenever you have the time. We request that you or your child complete the assessment in one sitting, with no outside distractions or help.

Because this is an assessment of how you or your child perceives his or her environment, there are no right or wrong answers. During the assessment, you or your child will be given pictures or scenarios, and you or your child will be asked to make predictions or draw conclusions based on the information given. As a parent, if you would like to view the GALT online before deciding if you would like your child to participate, then log in as a “parent.”

Based on the responses that are given, the assessment will automatically assess the developmental level of your child. There are no known risks to participation in this research study.

All responses to this assessment will be kept strictly confidential. No identifying information (either name, email, or IP address) is collected as a part of this survey.

We will publish a summary of everybody's responses and present our summary at scientific meetings and journals, but your or your child’s identity and your or your child’s responses will be totally confidential.

Sometimes study participants have questions or concerns about their rights. In that case, you should call the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institutional Review Board at 402-472-6965.

We are asking for your permission for you or your child to do this assessment. If you are sure that you do not want to participate or do not want your child to participate, navigate away from this page. However, if you do want to participate and/or you allow your child to participate, please check the button(s) at the bottom of this page indicating that you give your permission.

You are free to withdraw at any time after checking the boxes below without adversely affecting your relationship with the investigators, the University of Nebraska, your teacher, or your school. Simply navigate away from the website and your information will not be recorded. Your decision will not result in any loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.

If you have any questions at any time, please contact alexnicoll@verizon.net.
If you decide to participate, please check the box below that you have read this letter, understand the letter, and give your consent to participate.

YOU ARE VOLUNTARILY MAKING A DECISION WHETHER OR NOT TO PARTICIPATE OR ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS STUDY. YOUR CHECK BOX BELOW CERTIFIES THAT YOU HAVE DECIDED TO PARTICIPATE OR TO ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE HAVING READ AND UNDERSTOOD THE INFORMATION PRESENTED.
