Dear Community College Colleague,
International / Global Education seeks to provide educational opportunities that enable community college students to obtain an understanding of the increasingly global and international world. It has been a few years since California Colleges for International Education (CCIE) has conducted a State-of the-Art survey for our field. The linked survey epitomizes the fundamental goal of CCIE, i.e. cooperation and the sharing of information by documenting that the variety of activities in which all California community colleges are involved. This survey is being funded in part by a grant from the International Foundation for Study Abroad (IFSA), and in part from a OCEA Grant from the Department of State received in affiliation with College of the Canyons.
There is a need to embrace internationalization of our campuses because as the U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan (2009) confirms, “community colleges are invaluable resources for adults seeking to acquire new skills needed by employers.” Those new skills have an international foundation for as President Barack Obama noted in his speech to Congress on February 24, 2009, “our children will compete for jobs in a global economy that too many of our schools do not prepare them for” (White House, 2009). This is confirmed by the Chronicle of Higher Education, which states that “Community-college leaders want to ensure that their institutions produce students who can collaborate with co-workers from other countries and cultures, who have an understanding of global economics, and who, perhaps, even speak a foreign language” (Fisher, 2008) and which reinforces the AACC and ACCT 2006 Joint Statement that affirms that “we live in a time of continuous economic and social change driven by increasing globalization” (Boggs & Irwin, 2007, p. 27). Community college leaders all agree that our task at hand is to encourage and prepare faculty, students, and the community to be globally engaged.
We understand that the survey is quite detailed and may require that you share parts of this survey with a variety of offices at your campus. In an ongoing effort to simplify this process for the future, we will use this 2009 CCIE survey as a prototype for each college. Hence, in the future, we will send you your college profile which will then will only require annual updating. Therefore, we request that you complete the enclosed survey as accurately as possible.
The benefits of a completed survey are substantial. Reports will be shared throughout the state, to national community college groups and will be included in the ERIC Community College files. In sum, data from this survey will re-confirm California community colleges as leaders in the field of international education.
In November, 2009, our country celebrated its tenth annual International Education Week (IEW), sponsored by the U.S. Departments of State and Education. For information on IEW, please visit: http://iew.state.gov/. This survey will provide in-depth information to inform activities for future International Education Week celebrations.
