At our first Roundtable of the school year, we will discuss the new Amendments to the Manual of Requirements for Child Care Centers from the Department of Children and Families. Some of the major changes include:

Requiring daily physical activity for specified periods of time and limiting inactivity.

Limiting use of television, computers and video; developing written plan íor use.

Prohibiting sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened beverages unless contraindicated by parent or health care provider for centers providing meals/Snacks.

Providing a variety of fruits and vegetables, and high portion of whole grains for centers providing meals/snacks.

Prohibiting solid food for infants under 6 months and specifying types of milk for infants and toddlers.

Including breast feeding arrangements in feeding plans for children under 18 months.

Requiring newly hired staff to complete orientation prior to working without direct supervision by adult staff.

Increasing annual staff development to 10 hours per year, with 2 hours in each of the 3 areas.

Including physical activity, special needs programming and American with Disabilities Act guidelines lo staff development for credentìaled staff.

Requiring directors to complete Understanding Licensing Regulations within 90 days of hire.

Requiring tracking of children at off-site locations and require at least 2 staff accompanying children on field trips or outings away from the center.

Requiring at least 2 staff trained in first aid and CPR present at the center.

Ensuring children are evacuated in 3 minutes or less during a fire drill.

Discontinuing use of stackable cribs by August 6, 2014.

Requiring new/relocating early childhood centers to have 350 square feet of net outdoor space, plus 35 square feet per child if more than 10 children use space at one time.

Updating environmental safety requirements in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Health.
