Gender Matters

How can we campaign to improve women's lives in Scotland

During the independence referendum Engender worked with groups of women around Scotland identifying areas of policy and society where change was needed. We are now continuing this work to identify key areas where we should push for change.

Please fill out this survey to help us plan how we can most effectively campaign for change in Scotland.

This is just one part of a long-term process to engage with women in Scotland on their priorities for action on gender equality. As well as this survey, we will be holding open space events and thematic round tables leading up to a conference on June 4th. The results of this work will be used to inform our work both in the long term, and in the lead up to Scottish Parliament and Local Authority elections.

* 2. For each area, please outline what changes you think Engender should push for to improve women's lives in Scotland. These could be small, legislative changes, or bigger things like shifts in politics, attitudes or cultures which could take years to achieve. For each area we've put an example of a change, but this is just for some inspiration - it doesn't mean that Engender necessarily supports or will campaign for this change.

Fair economy e.g. other measures are used alongside GDP to measure economic performance.

Intersectionality e.g. maternity services are accessible by disabled women

Public services e.g. transport patterns are designed around women's needs

Media and culture e.g. BBC news programmes have an equal number of men and women speaking as experts

Labour market/employment e.g. having the right to work flexibly

Politics and public life e.g. the creation of a Minister for Women

Reproductive rights e.g. the removal of the 2 doctor requirement when seeking an abortion

Social Security e.g. a halt to the implementation of Universal Credit

Unpaid work such as care e.g. universal free childcare

Violence Against Women e.g. resources for refugee and asylum-seeking women to access support services

Inclusion e.g. childcare is provided as standard at all public meetings
