General Aviation Flight Data Monitoring

The following 18 questions have been developed as part of a grant from the FAA ASIAS (Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing) through the Center for General Aviation Research concerning Flight Data Monitoring in general aviation. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate the familiarity and perceptions of the general aviation community concerning Flight Data Monitoring capabilities and objectives.

If you are NOT familiar with Flight Data Monitoring and/or Flight Operations Quality Assurance activities in general aviation your input to the first six questions is requested.

1. Which best describes your general aviation activities?
2. Which best categorizes your involvement in general aviation?
3. Check the highest level appropriate for your usage of general aviation aircraft.
4. How many total flight hours have you logged?
5. How many total flight hours have you logged in the past 12 months?
6. I am familiar with Flight Data Monitoring and/or Flight Operations Quality Assurance applications in general aviation. If you are not familiar with Flight Data Monitoring and/or Flight Operations Quality Assurance please omit the remaining questions (7 to 18) and click the "done" button at the end.
7. I believe that Flight Data Monitoring can be beneficial for general aviation.
8. I feel that Flight Data Monitoring is an intrusion to personal privacy.
9. From what I know, the term Flight Data Monitoring accurately reflects the type of activities it entails.
10. I believe that Flight Data Monitoring will improve general aviation operations in the future.
11. The possible improvements to general aviation safety are sufficient for me to voluntarily participate in a national Flight Data Monitoring program in which my de-identified flight data would be submitted to a national database.
12. The possible improvements to my personal flying skills and safety would be sufficient for me to voluntarily participate in a national Flight Data Monitoring program in which my de-identified flight data would be submitted to a national database.

For me to voluntarily participate in a national FDM program in which my de-identified flight data would be submitted to a national database I would expect some form of tangible incentive such as reduced insurance costs, reduced operating costs, higher aircraft resale value, lower lease costs, or lower rental fees.
14. For me to voluntarily participate in a national Flight Data Monitoring program in which my de-identified flight data would be submitted to a national database I would expect immunity from criminal, administrative , and/or civil liability for unintentional errors and procedural deviations.
15. I believe the term Flight Data Monitoring should be changed to more adequately reflect the type of activities it entails.
