Invitation

Hello, I am a graduate student undertaking a Master's degree in design. I invite you to take part in a research questionnaire. However, before you decide, you need to understand why the research is being done and what it would involve for you. Please read the following information to decide whether or not to participate.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THIS QUESTIONNAIRE?

The aim of research activities including this questionnaire is to identify challenges and opportunities for Wayfinding (finding your way around) related to the building and architectural materials selected for the places you visit. I would like to determine how materials selection and application practices could evolve by adopting more inclusive and user focused design principles.

APPROVAL FOR ETHICAL RESEARCH

This survey has been reviewed by the program advisor, and the Ethical Research Coordinator at my institution. It has received approval for launch, provided all responses are anonymous, and no contact information such as IP addresses are captured.

WHAT IS WAYFINDING?

'Way-finding' is a term originated by the US architect and planner Kevin Lynch, in his book Image of the City, published in 1960. Lynch used it to express the processes involved in navigation and making our way around our communities and cities. Wayfinding depends on how we interact with physical and sensory aspects of places including sounds, smells, points of interest and other visual cues for exterior and interior of buildings and public spaces. Architectural materials (e.g. brick, marble, glass) among many other building elements may play a key role in Wayfinding, as these elements contribute to developing visual, auditory, tactile, perceptual or "internal maps” of how best to get around during our daily activities.

WHY HAVE I BEEN INVITED?

Several groups of people from many organizations (public and private) are being invited to respond to the following, anonymous (non-identifying) questionnaire. The greater the number of people participating, the greater the sampling of responses to begin to understand if there are trends related to Wayfinding and materials selection and application for buildings and public spaces.

DO I NEED TO TAKE PART?

This is a voluntary activity, and it is up to you to decide. No contact information such as E-mail or IP address will be collected from you. You are free to withdraw or stop at any time, without giving a reason, and there is no consequence should you decide to withdraw. Your participation would be much appreciated, however.

HOW LONG WILL THE QUESTIONNAIRE TAKE?

There are Twenty-One (21) questions, and it is estimated that the questionnaire will take 15-20 minutes to complete.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE RESPONSES ONCE GATHERED?

Results from the questionnaire will be included in analysis along with other information gathered through a variety of research methodologies. The overall analysis will become part of a Master's dissertation for presentation and assessment. A survey link is sent to different groups of participants and the current survey results can be seen by respondents at the end of the questionnaire

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Should you decide to participate in answering the following questionnaire, I want to thank you in advance for your interest and time to undertake this activity.
