Informed Consent to Participate in Research:
You are being asked to participate in the research project described below. Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary and you may refuse to participate, or you may decide to stop your participation at any time. Should you refuse to participate in the study or should you withdraw your consent and stop participation in the study, your decision will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you may be otherwise entitled. You are being asked to read the information below carefully, and ask questions about anything you do not understand before deciding whether or not to participate. Your completed survey is an indication that your participation is voluntary.

Title: The Social Construction of Investment Risk: Do Social Norms Produce a Common Definition?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this research is to identify whether social networks and behavioral norms cause money managers to share a common definition of investment risk. The findings have implications for organizational structure, incentive and reward, and economic policy.

PROCEDURES
The research procedures are as follows: The survey is administered using Survey Monkey, an online service for administering surveys. Participants are asked to answer survey questions and submit their responses online.

EXPECTED DURATION
The total anticipated time commitment will be approximately 10-15 minutes.

RISKS OF PARTICIPATION
There are no anticipated risks associated with participation in this project.

BENEFITS TO THE SUBJECT
There is no direct benefit received from your participation in this study, but your participation will enhance the understanding of how social norms and networks influence money managers’ understanding of investment risk.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF RECORDS
Your confidentiality will be kept to the degree permitted by the technology being used. No guarantees can be made regarding the interception of data sent via the Internet by any third parties. Every effort will be made to maintain the confidentiality of records. The surveys will not contain identifying information. The data, used for educational purposes only, will not contain identifying information. For federal audit purposes, the participant’s documentation for this research project will be maintained and safeguarded by the Faculty Sponsor, Dr. Mike McMullen, for a minimum of three years after completion of the study. After that time, the participant’s documentation may be destroyed.

FINANCIAL COMPENSATION
There is no financial compensation to be offered for participation in the study.

INVESTIGATOR’S RIGHT TO WITHDRAW PARTICIPANT
The investigator has the right to withdraw you from this study. Surveys submitted by respondents under the age of 19 will be eliminated from the study.
