Part I: Potential Nominees for Distinguished Fellowships

 
The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards encourages and supports students to compete for prestigious national and international scholarships and fellowships.

Below please input the name and student ID number (if you know the m-number) for up to 5 of the most impressive and highest-performing UNDERGRADUATE students that you have taught or interacted with during the past semester.

Specifically, we are seeking to identify students who may be eligible for one of the following six distinguished awards that require university nomination for the student to be considered. The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards will invite students to participate in internal competitions to name the university’s nominees for the upcoming awards cycle.

TO SUPPORT ONGOING UNDERGRADUATE STUDY for sophomore or junior level students who aspire to attend graduate school in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering, OR in fields relating to the environment OR in fields leading to a career in tribal public policy or Native American health care OR study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to US interests.
1. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
2. Udall Scholarship
3. Boren Scholarshio

TO SUPPORT POSTGRADUATE STUDY in nearly any discipline
4. George J. Mitchell Scholarships
5. Harry S. Truman Scholarship Program (students apply when a junior)
6. Marshall Scholarships
7. Rhodes Scholarships
8. Fulbright Program Grants

It is not necessary for you to know specifics regarding eligibility for these awards or whether any of these awards is a good fit for the student(s) you identify. The Office of Nationally Competitive awards will contact students that you refer to encourage and advise them regarding their potential suitability for any of these awards. In general, students who are competitive for the distinguished scholarships listed above:
• hold outstanding academic records that would qualify them for admission into first-rate graduate programs at American or British universities;
• engage in innovative projects, research, or public service initiatives that promise to further knowledge and transform lives;
• display through their interactions an intellect and integrity of character that in combination demonstrate competence and inspire trust;
• exhibit breadth of knowledge and interests beyond their intended career fields;
• demonstrate potential ability to seize opportunities, deliver results, and serve as influential leaders wherever their careers eventually take them.
