Use: As a nonorganically produced agricultural products allowed as an ingredient in or on processed products labeled as “organic" only when the product is not commercially available in organic form.
Common applications: Used as a gelling agent and stabilizer/thickener; it's functional properties are similar to those for food ingredients such as gelatin, pectin, modified starches and vegetable gums. Also classified by USDA-APHIS as a binder in meat and poultry products.
