Obesity represents one of the most serious threats to the health of the UK population and has the potential of breaking the NHS. Obesity levels have doubled in the last two decades. Today nearly 60 % of adults are overweight or obese. Problem is more serious still among children where 22.5 per cent of boys and girls are overweight or obese at the age of four or five. By the time they reach 10 or 11, the figure is 33.5 per cent. Obesity is costing the UK almost £45 billion a year, and has been stated as National Crisis by various health experts. Obesity is directly associated with many illnesses, chief among them are diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular complications, cancers, liver disease, psychological and psychiatric morbidities.

Currently, weigh-ins are done on an ad-hoc basis. Children are weighed aged four and not weighed again until they are ten. Assessment tool used is BMI which, as per health experts, is an inefficient tool to assess childhood obesity.
