Common Reading Finalists 2013

1. Common Reading Program background

Thank you for taking time to learn about our Common Reading Program for new students coordinated by the Office of Academic Initiatives in the University College.

Common reading programs are part of the orientation and transition experience for new students at institutions nation-wide, providing a shared academic experience for all first-year students, while strengthening the academic atmosphere on campus. We believe our Common Reading Program gives new students at St. Cloud State a positive introduction to the academic life of our institution as well as its core values.

The criteria used by the Common Read book selection committee have been:

  • readability for general audience/first-year students
  • alignment with St. Cloud State University's Learning Commitments: active and applied learning, community engagement, sustainability, and global and cultural understanding
  • programming potential
  • the possibilities for interdisciplinary work
  • incorporability
