Dress Code Survey
(3 questions plus comment line)
The Eastmont Board of Director’s implemented an updated District-wide dress code this school year. Part of this process is to seek input as revisions are considered for 2012-13.
The dress code represents a desire to educate young people that part of becoming an adult is making your own choices, yet also learning that dressing differently for different occasions is also part of this process and important for many occupations and social expectations.
However, court cases across the country continue to uphold a student’s right to express themselves in their daily K-12 school attire as long as there is no observable disruption to the educational process. The few exceptions in this area are if the style of dress, hair, or jewelry is recognized as being associated with current regional gang activities.
The 2012-13 DRAFT dress code rules are:
1. Long pants including jeans/khakis (Allowed)
2. Shorts or skirts that extend to the fingertip when the arm is straight down (Allowed)
3. Shirts with sleeves and necklines no lower than a straight line between underarms (Allowed)
4. Sleeveless shirts with small armholes and shoulder straps a minimum width of 3 student fingers
(Not Allowed except in grades 10-12)
5. Shirts that display the midriff (Not Allowed)
6. Alcohol, drug, or weapon related words, art, or symbols (Not Allowed)
7. Nonathletic shoes in PE/recess or barefoot (Not Allowed)
8. Gang affiliated clothing, piercing, tattoos, jewelry, and hair styles as recognized by law enforcement
(Not Allowed)
9. Hats, sunglasses, or bandanas worn or displayed at school other than with order from a medical
doctor (Not Allowed)
10. Mesh/sheer clothing with large holes unless approved clothing underneath (Not Allowed)
