Global Learning in Schools in England

 
The Development Education Research Centre based in the Institute of Education, University of London (www.ioe.ac.uk/derc) is carrying out research into global learning in schools in England: what enables good practice and the impacts of global learning.

Global learning might be known by a number of different names, for example, development education, global citizenship education, the global dimension, human rights education and values education. It also includes a range of possible approaches, which include, school linking, fairtrade, sustainable schools, challenging stereotypes, peer mediation, rights-based approaches and philosophy for children.

A major part of data collection for the research is an online questionnaire survey targeted at people working in schools – teachers, head teachers, deputies, etc. If you work in a school we would be very grateful if you could spare the time to click through and complete the questionnaire. It should take around 15 minutes. It doesn’t matter if your school is only involved in global learning in a small way – all information is equally valuable. Some respondents will know more about the whole school and others about what happens at classroom level – that’s fine too, please give the information you are comfortable giving and know about.

DERC will offer free places on a professional development course it runs in the summer to ten respondents to the questionnaire. Those lucky respondents will be selected randomly on questionnaires completed by 30th March when the survey will close.

The research is important because little quantitative data has been collected on global learning in schools. Most research on the impact of global learning is small-scale and anecdotal. We want to map a realistic picture of global learning in England which will inform schools, training providers and policy makers about its benefits and drawbacks.

If you are able to complete the questionnaire we would appreciate if you could answer as accurately as possible. If you could ask colleagues and friends who work in schools to also complete the questionnaire it would be gratefully appreciated. The more responses we get the more credible the research becomes. All responses are confidential.
