1. Introduction
Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre provides service to children from birth to age twelve and their families. The Centre is committed to promoting and strengthening the emotional and social well-being of children and their families, through a variety of prevention, intervention and treatment services.
The Infant Child Treatment Team at Aisling Discoveries provides counseling service to families with young children living in Scarborough. We are dedicated to promoting infant mental health and provide these counseling services for babies and toddlers(under the age of four) and their families.
What is infant mental health?
Over the last ten years, the new field of infant mental health has been growing rapidly. Infant mental health is best understood as being about a young child’s healthy social-emotional development – that is, the development of a young child’s ability to experience, express and regulate emotion, to establish loving, supportive relationships with others, and to explore the environment and learn from it (Zero to Three, 2001).
We know that all parents want to provide their babies and toddlers with love and care and ensure that they raise happy and confident children. At Aisling Discoveries we want to support parents as best we can in their parenting hopes and dreams.
The ACTION project
The goals of our ACTION project are to increase awareness of infant mental health and to better understand the needs of families with babies and toddlers living in Scarborough.
We would like to invite our community partners and Scarborough parents to work together with us in identifying barriers in service, areas of need, gaps and strengths to build on. To gather this information, we have developed a short survey and will be hosting focus groups and interviews. We will use this information to improve our infant mental health services to meet the needs of families in Scarborough.
We appreciate you completing this survey and welcome your participation and feedback.
