Thinking Outside The Box: Career Awareness and Exploration
Career awareness and exploration is a key component to helping youth develop who they are and who they want to become. The Out-of-School Time (OST) setting provides a unique opportunity to give students access to career awareness and exploration, by having the time to allow youth to develop and expand their interests, as well as offering a forum for professionals to engage the students as speakers or mentors.
This forum will provide practical strategies for assisting youth in identifying career interests, values and skills; gaining an awareness of the world of work; identifying career goals; researching and exploring career pathways that support career interests; and participating and applying learning experiences that reflect career interests (i.e., job shadowing, volunteering, service learning, etc.).
