Orientation is designed to welcome and introduce all entering students and their families to Gettysburg College. It helps new students and parents, who are making the transition from their previous environment to the academic, community and social culture of Gettysburg. This packet is designed to provide more information and details about the leadership opportunities based in student staff positions that support the programs for incoming students. Goals, positions descriptions, selection process, and faculty/staff recommendation are included.

Goals for Orientation and Charting Your Course (CYC):

1. To introduce entering students to the opportunities and responsibilities of academic life at Gettysburg College;

2. To integrate entering students into life at Gettysburg;

3. To help students understand the importance of community values and involvement;

4. To familiarize the families of new students with the college experience;

5. To introduce students to the wealth of Gettysburg College resources.

Qualifications
The Office of Residential & First-Year Programs will select a group of mature and dedicated student leaders to assist with implementing orientation programs this fall. Selection to the First-Year staff team is a unique honor and a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth. The Orientation Leader position focuses delivery of the Orientation program to the incoming students. Candidates need not currently hold leadership positions, but they must have the capacity to lead as well as the desire to work within a team structure.

We welcome the applications of rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors for these important positions. We attempt to assemble a team which is extremely diverse in terms of students’ backgrounds, experiences, activities and interests. Our team must be able to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for every new student and family to Gettysburg.

Overall Qualifications
• Prior leadership experience on campus
• Possess a solid academic record and be an exemplary campus citizen. (General guidelines: 2.5 GPA, no probation in any area.)
• Good disciplinary standing
• Knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Orientation
• Positive mental attitude and able to motivate others
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (via resume and interview)
• Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members, students, and administrators
• Demonstrate flexibility, responsibility, and willingness to assist others
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a role model in terms of academic, social, and ethical behavior.
