1. The purpose of this research project is to determine if there is a relationship between social network usage and the user's self esteem, autonomy, and self acceptance in young adults ages 18-25. This is a research project being conducted by Sydney Hutton at Bowie High School.
Your participation in this research study is voluntary. You may choose not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey, you may withdraw at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you withdraw from participating at any time, you will not be penalized.
The procedure involves filling out a 45 multiple choice question online survey that will take approximately 10 minutes. Your responses will be confidential and we do not collect identifying information such as your name, email address or IP address. The survey questions will be about social network usage, demographics, self esteem, autonomy and self acceptance.
Potential risks of the study include feelings of discomfort associated with self analysis and/or feelings of psychological vulnerability. Benefits include contribution to the discovery of possible effects of social networking on participant self-esteem, autonomy or self acceptance.
We will do our best to keep your information confidential. To help protect your confidentiality, the survey will not contain information that will personally identify you. Data will be stored on a secure personal computer with only the researcher having access to it. The data at the end of the study will continue to be kept private and confidential. The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only and may be shared with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair representatives.
There is always the possibility of tampering from an outside source when using the
internet for collecting information. While the confidentiality of your responses will
be protected once the data are downloaded from the internet, there is always a
possibility of hacking or other security breaches that could threaten the
confidentiality of your responses. Please know that you are free to decide not to answer any question.
