Course Overview
The purpose of this presentation is to discuss common problematic issues related to EMTALA including an overview of those that occurred at IHS hospitals. These were contained in two tag numbers, 2400 and 2406. These two tag numbers are the most common among all hospitals comprising 379 of the 695 out of the first deficiency memo issued in 2013 by CMS. There will be a discussion of what is required under these two tag numbers.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the CMS deficiency report which lists the most common EMTALA violation.
2. Recall some specific EMTALA deficiencies within the IHS hospitals such as the failure to provide an appropriate medical screening exam.
3. Describe how a certificate of false labor must be completed if the patient is sent home in false labor.
