The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) was established in 2008 by the Water Stewardship Initiative (now Water Stewardship Australia), The Nature Conservancy and the Pacific Institute. The aim was to establish a global water stewardship program, based on a stakeholder endorsed standard credible verification, market recognition and a multi-stakeholder governance regime. Additional organizations joined AWS as “Board Organizations” in order to give the range of perspectives and expertise needed for the development of the water stewardship system to begin. AWS now has ten Board Organizations, each of which nominates an individual to be a Director of AWS.

Recognizing that an international water stewardship system should be multi-stakeholder and include strong regional engagement channels, the AWS Board has agreed a plan to transition from the current structure to an international, multi-stakeholder and membership-based organization.

The purpose of this consultation is to inform the AWS Board of the primary considerations when developing the main elements of multi-stakeholder governance for AWS. The consultation takes the form of a short questionnaire focusing on the following five elements:
Regional representation
Membership
Decision-making bodies
Decision-making hierarchy
Stakeholder participation

Questions relating to each element are on a separate page. Please complete all the pages of this short questionnaire.

Thank you for helping to develop multi-stakeholder governance for AWS.

More information on the background of this consultation is available on the "consultations" page of the AWS website.
