Elementary

Anti-Defamation League – Read for Respect (3rd Grade)
Read4Respect, part of the No Place for Hate campaign, connects volunteers to elementary schools by engaging them in reading books that promote respect. Read4Respect helps students learn an essential “4th R”--Reading, writing, arithmetic… and Respect. The corporate world increasingly identifies interpersonal skills as one of the most important contributors to workplace success. The skills learned through diversity education--teaching students to appreciate differences and treat all people with respect--include many of these ‘”soft skills.” Anti-bias education programs can also develop leadership skills, foster responsible citizenship and promote of democratic values.

United Way of Greater Atlanta – (K- 3rd Grade)
With a strategic focus on career awareness, United Way of Greater Atlanta is excited to partner with Atlanta Partners for Education on Project for A Day! This volunteer experience will provide the opportunity for elementary students to see the purposefulness in their learning, early in their academic careers and to connect education with career success. Volunteers will read a book and speak to the students about the importance of attending school every day, discuss their career path and engage with students in an activity.

City of Atlanta Recycling – (3rd Grade)
This volunteer experience will provide the opportunity for elementary school students to observe their habits as well as the habits of their family when it comes to reducing, reusing, and recycling. Students will be responsible for collecting specific data from home for one week. Volunteers will review and analyze the data with students and collaborate to recommend ways to reduce their waste, reuse various items, and recycle. Volunteers will also conduct one to two art projects with the students to instill reusing items to create new ones.

Middle

Junior Achievement of Georgia (8th Grade)
• JA Assembling Your Career is designed to engage middle school students in STEM Careers. Through the online app students will explore practical information about STEM careers and learn how they can prepare for these high-demand careers while still in school. Following participation in the supplement, students will be able to:
• Articulate why STEM careers and STEM skills are important to their futures, regardless of where they live now or where they choose to live as an adult.
• Identify two-three STEM fields that they wish to explore beyond these activities.
• Chart a path to get them from where they are now to a STEM career.
JA will provide volunteers with training prior to the date of their event.

Atlanta Public Schools –CTAE Department (8th Grade)
• The project is focused on the competencies of Critical Thinking, Teamwork and Collaboration and Choices and Consequences.
• In order to provide an understanding of these competencies, students will participate in an exercise called The Big Picture.
• The exercise is intended as a first step towards educating middle school students specifically 8th graders on the true costs associated with choices and related spending habits.
• At the end of the exercise, students will experience the consequences of their decisions, and learn the importance of collaborating to achieve desired results.
High

Project Grad Atlanta and Great Promise Partnership team project (10th and 11th Grade)
Project GRAD Atlanta: The volunteers will help students to complete college applications and make critical connections between career possibilities.
• The project that GRAD is implementing will pair community members with aspiring college students to walk them through the HBCU Common Application.
• For one fee, the HBCU Common Application allows students to apply to 32 schools.
• Typically $35, the HBCU Common APP will be discounted to $14.00 for Project GRAD participants!
Volunteers will be paired with aspiring college students to walk them through the HBCU Common Application. If volunteers should receive any questions from students that seem beyond your expertise, please do not hesitate to ask the GRAD staff member or APS Counselor/Graduation Coach in the room to assist in helping the students.

Great Promise Partnership: The GPP Workplace Success program teaches students necessary workplace skills through hands-on exercises. Volunteers will lead students through a series of simple icebreakers and activities which will help them discover and demonstrate:
• Respect in the workplace
• The importance of following rules in the workplace
• Qualities employers are looking for from their employees
• The necessity of communication in the workplace

Atlanta Public Schools – CTAE Department – (10th Grade)
My Potential Life
• The purpose of the exercise, My Potential Life, is to expose 10th graders to life choices after high school. This exercise focuses on the competencies of Critical Thinking, Choices and Consequences, and Survival Skills in the real game of life. This game assumes that the students have graduated from high school and have taken one of three tracks in life – 1) directly into the workforce; 2) completed a trade school; 3) completed college. The students also live in the greater Atlanta area in either Fulton or DeKalb counties where public transportation is available. The goal of the game is for students to have a positive balance in their bank accounts at the end of the game
The Exercise:
• Students will select an occupation blindly from the Occupation Cards.
• Students will select a salary blindly from the Salary Cards.
• Students are given a My Potential Life Bank Card. They will record their occupation and salary at the top of the card. Using calculators, students will compute their Paycheck for a year after deducting 30% of their gross pay as federal and state taxes, dental, medical and life insurance deductions.
• Each student takes one card from Life Situation Cards. With the exception of the Lottery card and the Family Matter (Brother, Sister, Parents) or Opportunity cards, every student records the transactions on the My Potential Life Bank Card. Along with recalculating balances with each transaction, an emotion should also be recorded. Only the student that draws the Lottery Card will record the amount on his or her bank card. One student will be assigned the role of banker. The banker will be responsible for loaning money to those who need to borrow money in order to keep their balances positive. The borrowed money or credit card transaction is recorded on the student’s card borrowing the money or using a credit card as well as the banker’s card.
• A larger group discussion is held after the ending balances are tallied. Students will be asked what they could have done differently if anything to avoid borrowing money from the bank.

Gifted Career Synergy Symposium:(11th and 12th Grade Students)
The goal of the Gifted Career Synergy Symposium is to expose students to diverse career options and career strategies. We are looking for volunteers from diverse career fields to provide insight for the students enrolled in the Gifted Mentorship/Internship Program. Volunteers will facilitate 30 minute sessions and provide information about their career paths and career selection
