ACP’s Diversity Policy

The American College of Physicians’ membership comprises a diverse population of internists, subspecialists of internal medicine, and medical students. ACP values diversity and views it as one of its greatest strengths. The College welcomes prospective members regardless of race; ethnicity; gender; religion; age; sexual orientation; nationality; disability; appearance; geographic location; and professional activity, such as private practice, research, or academic medicine.

ACP strives to encourage internists and subspecialists of internal medicine from diverse groups to join the College, participate in chapter activities, and seek to attain positions of leadership. ACP believes that a commitment to diversity strengthens the organization's capacity to respond to the needs of its members and their patients, i.e., to recognize that diversity is an important aspect of infrastructure that enhances relevance and effectiveness.

Christine Desautels, MD
Christine Desautels, MD
Current occupation(s): Chief resident at Abbott Northwestern Hospital; entering primary care practice with Abbott Northwestern General Medicine Associates in September 2015

Brief summary of training:
Bachelor of Science, Biochemistry, University of California - Santa Barbara, graduated June 2006
Doctor of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School - Twin Cities, graduated August 2010, included participation in 9-month Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP)
Residency Training in Internal Medicine, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, MN, June 2011 – June 2014
Chief Resident, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, July 2014 – present

What qualities would you bring to the MN-ACP Council?
As a young physician recently out of training, I would bring a unique perspective and energy to ACP council meetings. I have had the opportunity to attend council meetings as the chief resident representative from Abbott Northwestern Hospital and greatly appreciate the spirit of collegiality and mission of advocacy that the ACP embodies. Over the past year, I have also gained valuable experience developing and serving as chairwoman of a new resident-run Quality and Safety Committee at Abbott, which has taught me a great deal about committee organization and the extra push needed to bring ideas generated in group discussion to fruition. I believe I would bring enthusiasm and insight from the early career perspective by serving on the ACP council during my first year(s) in practice, and would hope to translate that into a commitment to leadership and service throughout my career.

What would be your areas of interest in working on the Council?
I am particularly interested in becoming involved with the early career physicians' committee and in activities related to health policy.

Any additional comments?
Thank you very much for considering me for a council position. If elected, I would be most honored to represent the viewpoints of early career physicians and those in community-based primary care while supporting the ACP's ongoing commitment to our patients throughout Minnesota.

By joining the MN ACP scientific meeting planning committee right after residency, I was exposed right away
to ACP on a level I had not known. I am a hard-working, clear-headed, practical person who would work to
bring the perspective of a younger, community based internist to the group.

What would be your areas of interest in working on the Council?
I look forward to finding ways to continue to make ACP in Minnesota relevant to its members both in terms of its scientific meeting but also other services and programs.

In addition to my educational activities at Mayo, I am involved in education at the national American College of Physicians (ACP). I am currently serving on the 2015 ACP Annual Meeting Scientific Planning Committee and as section editor for the General Internal Medicine section of MKSAP 17. I believe my passion for education and my ability to develop and plan educational programs will be useful skills to bring to the Council.

Deepti Pandita, MD, FACP
Current occupation(s): Internal Medicine Specialist at Park Nicollet, Wayzata;
Consultant Methodist hospital as Hospitalist; Co-Chair, Physician Informatics Committee at Park Nicollet; EMR Clinician Champion-Park Nicollet-Health Partners Medical Group

Brief summary of training:
Medical Education-Christian Medical College, Vellore, India; MD in Ophthalmology, SN Medical College, India; MD Internal Medicine, University of North Dakota
Oregon Health Sciences University, 10x10 Clinical Informatics training
Board Certified in Internal Medicine; Board Certified in Clinical Informatics

What qualities would you bring to the MN ACP Council?
I have a lot of experience in the practice of general Internal medicine in both urban and rural setting. Prior to being in the Twin cities I worked for 3 years in a federally undeserved area in MN as practice director where I was the solo MD with 5 mid-level providers. This gave me a deep understanding of the needs of the grass root clinicians. I am also trained and board certified in Clinical Informatics and have interest in how the EMR can be used to improve patient and clinician satisfaction and how to use it to improve population health. I have been a presenter at local and national CME meetings and also serve as a member at ICSI for CHF and breast cancer management teams. I have attended MN ACP meetings and been a judge for the poster competitions. I started with the ACP as a student member and have continued to be a member as I appreciate the value this membership brings to my daily practice of medicine.

What would be your areas of interest in working on the Council?
1.) Leveraging EMR for improving clinician and patient satisfaction;
2.) Using EMR and Informatics tools to ease clinician work load;
3.) Population health and chronic disease management;
4.) Documentation improvement in the EMR era and easing time spent in front of computer and increasing face to face time by creating new and improved documentation tools and making patients a partner in developing and maintaining the medical record;
5.) Electronic Interoperability across systems to reduce duplication of tests and orders which would reduce cost of care;
6.) Provide clinicians with Clinical Decision support tools at the point of care delivery so they can provide evidence based care to every patient. I am part of the national AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) Clinical Decision Support committee for Primary Care which works closely with ACP on this topic.

Any additional comments?
The practice of medicine is changing and evolving rapidly. I see my colleagues struggle with ever increasing demands of documentation, non value added work while they are pressured to see more patients and take time away from families. I hope the ACP can spearhead change helping ease the clinician burden by providing them tools and training as well as being the voice for those who face these daily challenges .I feel the ACP is the right medium to bring about meaningful change to ease the work of the grass roots clinician.

Question Title

Cory Yarke, MD, PhD

Cory Yarke, MD, PhD
Cory Yarke, MD, PhD
Current occupation(s): Associate Hospitalist at St. Cloud Hospital

Brief summary of training:
Internal Medicine Residency Program, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, MN 2011-2014
Doctorate of Medicine, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, MN 2007-2011
PhD in Immunology, University of Minnesota Graduate School, Minneapolis, MN 2002-2007
B.A. in Biology, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN 1998-2002

What qualities would you bring to the MN ACP Council?
I feel that there are several key qualities that I can bring to the ACP council. In just embarking on my own career in medicine, I feel that I may provide a slightly different perspective as to some of the key issues that face relatively new Internal Medicine physicians. Career development of young physicians is a cornerstone on which Internal Medicine is built and ensures continued success of our specialty in the future. I also had the opportunity to train in the Twin Cities and subsequently begin my practice outside of the Metro Area. I believe this allows me some insight into the challenges that both of these medical worlds face and will allow me to better represent all Internal Medicine physicians in the state of Minnesota.

What would be your areas of interest in working on the Council?
I feel that early physician career development is an area of interest of mine. Recently beginning my own career provides me with excellent insight into the excitement, anticipation, and occasionally murky waters of beginning one’s career in Internal Medicine. A strong commitment to early physician development strengthens the backbone of the entire field of Internal Medicine and ensuring that they have a voice is crucial. I am also very interested in developing a better understanding of how to be both an excellent Internist as well as develop good work/life balance skills. As a devoted husband and father of three children, I work diligently to find this balance and ensure that I can have a good career in Internal Medicine and also make sure that my home life does not suffer either. I believe this is the key to ensuring a successful career and avoiding the dreaded “burnout.” I would love to be involved in both of these aims going forward.

Any additional comments?
If I were to obtain a position on the board of the Minnesota chapter of the ACP, it would truly be a great honor. Several role models in my career have been active members of the ACP and I certainly recognize the value that this organization has. I have enjoyed attending several different ACP conferences as well as had the opportunity to help teach bedside ultrasound at a conference several years prior. It is a great privilege to be an Internal Medicine physician. Our specialty will be at the forefront of the entire field of medicine going forward. We will play an instrumental role in providing excellent healthcare to all of our patients along with navigating the continued complexities that will be facing us in the years to come. I thank you for your consideration.
