Student-Teacher Relationship Survey

1. Welcome to the Teacher-Student Relationship Survey!

 
You are being asked to participate in a study of elementary teachers who have at least one student with a disability included in their classrooms. This study is being conducted by Travis Ceja Commons, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Your participation in this survey research is entirely voluntary and there will be no negative consequences if you refuse to participate in it, withdraw from it, or refuse to answer certain questions. Your participation is also completely anonymous. The link you clicked from your email to bring you to this page is unique and encrypted, and your individual answers will not be shared or presented in any way that would identify you as the source.

Why is this research being done?
The purpose of this study is to better understand the quality of relationships that general education teachers have with students with disabilities. Although a lot of research has already looked at how these relationships affect students, we do not yet know how teachers are affected by relationships with students.

What procedures are involved?
If you agree to participate in this study, you will complete the following electronic survey. This survey takes about 20 minutes to complete if you have one student with a disability. If you have more students with disabilities included in your classroom, you will need an additional 5 to 10 minutes for each student. It includes questions about your relationship with a particular student, your experience and education in teaching students with disabilities, your beliefs about your ability to be an effective teacher, and your level of job satisfaction. Approximately 300 teachers are expected to complete this survey.

What are the potential risks and discomforts?
Potential risks and discomforts from participation are the same as those of other online surveys. As with all online interactions, there is always the risk of intrusion by outside agents. However, great care is being taken to ensure your privacy is protected with the latest firewall and intrusion prevention. All of your responses are encoded before being collected, and they are therefore not linked to your email address or identity in any way.

Are there benefits to taking part in this study?
Every teacher who completes the survey will be entered in a drawing to win one of 5 $100 gift cards to her/his choice of Borders Bookstores or your local teacher supply store. In addition, you may request a free packet of information on how you can improve your relationships with your students. Once you complete the survey, you will be directed to a separate web page. On this page, which is not linked to your responses, you can submit your name and mailing address. Your name and address will be immediately deleted once the gift cards and packets have been mailed. I will never share your name, email address, or any personal information with any other party.
