WSAE's Commitment to Diversity
In principle and in practice, WSAE values and seeks diverse and inclusive participation within the field of association management. WSAE will promote involvement and expand access to leadership opportunity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, appearance, geographic location, or professional level. The Society will provide leadership and commit time and resources to accomplish this objective while serving as a model to other associations engaged in such endeavors.

General Overview
Question: Should WSAE adopt a new name, the Washington Society for Association Excellence?

Recommendation

The current name, Washington Society of Association Executives (WSAE), has been flagged for several years as a potential barrier to membership growth. The term “executive” is status-based and can be viewed as non-inclusive. The term feels exclusive to those not identifying as an executive level professional.

At the July 2021 WSAE Board Retreat, the newly formed DEI Task Force was asked to research alternative names and to provide a recommendation. In review of WSAE’s bylaws, mission, and vision statements, each includes the language “...association management professionals.” Furthermore, the WSAE’s Commitment to Diversity Statement reads “WSAE will promote involvement and expand access to leadership opportunity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, disability, appearance, geographic location, or professional level.” WSAE is striving and doing the work to become a more inclusive organization.

At the March 2022 Board of Directors Meeting, the DEI Task Force provided a full report that included a strong recommendation for a name change. After Board discussion, it was agreed the proposed new name would be the Washington Society for Association Excellence.

Final steps include reaching out to prospective members. WSAE is requesting your view on the proposed new name. Would you feel more included or inclined to join WSAE based on the proposed name? WSAE is committed to diversity and thanks you in advance for sharing your thoughts with us.
