Safeguarding Buffalo Ridge & Garden Valley Residents & Robbie E Howard Junior High School Students from Gas Station Health Effects |
As shown in the aerial above, a 7-Eleven gas station has been proposed for the northwest corner of Broadhead Road and Garden Valley Parkway. Benzene and other compounds released to the air from underground gasoline storage tank vents and at dispensers can pose a threat to the health of those who live or learn nearby. The aerial above shows the possible health impact zones of the proposed gas station. These impact zones are based on a 2019 Columbia University-Johns Hopkins study which documented that benzene has been detected at levels threatening human health up to 160 meters (524 feet) from a gas station. The USEPA School Siting Guidelines recommended caution when a school is considered for a site within 1,000 feet of a gas station.
The aerial shows that numerous homes are within 500-feet of the gas station site. The aerial also shows that Howard Jr High School campus is within 1,000-feet.
If you live near the proposed gas station or your children attend Howard Jr High School, then please add your name below to urge the Waxahachie City Council to safeguard your health, that of your family, and school students by denying a Special Use Permit for the proposed 7-Eleven gas station.
Denying approval for this 7-Eleven will not preclude new gas stations in Waxahachie. Our consultant's letter posted at the following link explains that more than half the likely locations for new gas stations in Waxahachie are more than 500 feet from homes: https://app.box.com/s/558t7bbvm7b1l3z0ymachhr1rdjhizty. So, by denying approval for the 7-Eleven the City Council will guide new gas stations to locations where the benefits can be gained within jeopardizing the health of our neighbors.
