General Overview and specific instructions to request volunteers:

Thank you for your interest in requesting volunteers for your department. Successful submission of this Volunteer Request form is required. The request will be reviewed by a Volunteer Coordinator and receive final approval from the Volunteer Services Manager.

Please review the following steps:
  1. Review Volunteer Requirements.
  2. Complete the Request Form and submit to Volunteer Services. The Request Form must be reviewed by Volunteer Services, pending approval.
  3. Volunteer Services will interview all prospective applicants prior to placement; upon referral to the department, the Volunteer Supervisor will schedule a meeting with the volunteer to discuss their schedule and start date.
  4. A Competency Checklist must be completed for each new volunteer and submitted to Volunteer Services.

Volunteer Requirements:  

  • Be at least 16 years of age.  There are a number of programs, which require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age. (Click here for a list of programs).
  • Have a current state or federal photo ID.
  • Commit to a minimum of six consecutive months of service;
    • at least 3-4 hours on the same day each week.
    • The only exception is the Summer High School Student Program.
    • Volunteers begin with one shift a week.
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (bilingual skills are a plus).
  • Submit an online application.
 

Volunteer Services does not:
  • coordinate internships or shadowing opportunities
  • coordinate or manage UCSF campus side volunteer opportunities (i.e. labs/research)

For Clerical-Only placements:
  • Volunteers may not serve more than 8 hours a week, and no more than 4 hours in a day. 
  • A maximum of 2 volunteers may be assigned to each department.
    Volunteers may not be used in place of hiring from temporary agencies.
