PURPOSE
This census is designed to build a comprehensive, comparable picture of Victoria’s museum, gallery, and community collecting sector. Data collected will be used to:
  • Support evidence-based advocacy to state and federal government
  • Quantify the sector’s social, economic, and cultural contribution
  • Identify sector-wide risks, pressures, and opportunities
  • Inform AMaGA Victoria programs, services, and policy priorities
  • Benchmark organisational health and change over time
  • Establish a baseline dataset for future census cycles

HOW TO COMPLETE

Preparation
  • Collaborate: We encourage a collaborative approach. Different areas suit different people in your organisation, so check the respondent recommendations at the start of each section.
  • Gather Information: Use the Census Template to prepare your responses before entering them online.
  • Set Expectations: Completion time varies with your organisation's size, complexity, and data availability. In testing, the average was 90 minutes.
  • Take Your Time: You don't need to finish in one sitting. Work at your own pace and save as you go.
Navigating & Saving
  • Skip Logic: Question numbers in the Census Template won't always match the online form. The online census uses skip logic, which automatically skips questions based on your answers. The skip logic questions have been marked in the template with an asterisk (*).
  • Asterisks: Questions marked with an asterisk (*) require a response as they trigger skip logic. Your answer determines which later sections apply to you.
  • Save Progress: Save your work by clicking 'Next.' Return anytime using the same link, on the same computer and browser.
  • Confirm Submission: Nothing is submitted until you click 'Submit' at the end.
Response Guidance
  • Figures: Use figures from your most recent completed financial year unless stated otherwise.
  • Estimations: Select 'Unsure' or give your best estimate if you don't know an answer. Estimates are still useful for advocacy.
  • Skip if Needed: You may leave questions blank if you can't obtain the information or prefer not to answer.

DATA CONFIDENTIALITY
We understand that some of the information requested in this census is sensitive. All responses are treated as strictly confidential. Data is held securely by AMaGA Victoria and will never be attributed to individual organisations. All published findings will present data in aggregate form only. Any case studies will be conducted separately, and only with explicit permission from interested organisations.
